Is your data really
protected?
Antivirus software is one of the most essential programs you can add to your PC.
From email to infected USB memory keys, the chances of a virus attack are
very likely if your company is not protected.
Merely having the software installed on your PC is not enough to provide
protection. When you purchase
antivirus software, it comes with a set of virus signatures—unique code that
distinguishes one virus from another.
When you receive malicious code, your software will compare the code with
virus patterns stored in its database.
If there’s a match, the code is stopped and you are informed that a virus
is present. If there’s no match, the
code is left to run. Most antivirus
software vendors provide signature updates on their websites.
In order to stay protected, you should always review the latest signature
files available and install them.
Unfortunately, this level of precaution cannot guarantee total protection.
With the advent of mass-mailing viruses, PC’s can become infected faster
than antivirus companies can develop a fix. When you consider this information,
your data is only as good as your last backup.
Therefore, it is also crucial that your company perform routine data
backups in conjunction with virus engine updates.
A backup is a duplicate copy of data stored for emergency retrieval.
Data backups are essential to safeguard against possible data loss.
Just consider how much time,
effort and money it would take to recover a system whose files were destroyed by
a virus attack that slipped past your defenses!
You should back up your data every day that you make a change to a file.
Backups need to be monitored to ensure they are running correctly and
validation checks are necessary to ensure that the recovery of files is
possible. Location of your backup
files is also critical. If
removable-media backups are stored in the office with your computers, a fire or
other disaster would destroy them both.
A secure off-site location is the best place to store backups.
