Staying connected with a Windows Mobile phone
The need for mobile
computing is becoming more prevalent every day.
As people do
more and more work away from their office, they need a way to stay connected and
up to date on tasks and meetings. Today’s mobile devices are delivering these
critical services, and they are getting integrated into cellular phones to
provide an always connected lifestyle.
If you purchase a
cell phone with an integrated PDA that runs the Microsoft Windows Mobile
operating system you can stay constantly connected to your Exchange server at
your office. This means is all of your email, contacts, and tasks that you see
on your computer at the office will also be seen on your Windows Mobile device.
If you have a secretary that updates your calendar at the office you will see
those changes, as they are made, on your Windows Mobile device. This also works
in the opposite direction. If you make a change on your Windows Mobile device,
the secretary will see the change at the office.
To take full
advantage of all of these features of Windows Mobile you must have a Microsoft
Exchange server at your office. This server acts as a host for all of your
information. The Windows Mobile device connects to this server over the Internet
to synchronize with all of your information. Another benefit of having this
Exchange server at your office is that if you do not have a Windows Mobile
device, you can connect to it from any Internet connected computer with a web
browser. You can log into what is called “Outlook Web Access” and have access to
all of your email, calendars, tasks, etc. Outlook Web Access looks and feels as
though you were running Microsoft Outlook, but in reality it is all inside a web
browser window.
A Windows Mobile
device not only keeps you connected with up to date information, but it allows
you to read and edit Word documents and Excel files. This can be an immensely
useful feature if you are trying to conduct business away from your office.
Someone can email you a word or excel file and you can open, read, make changes,
and send it back to the person anywhere and at anytime.
